Nik

If John Ashcroft's department not been chasing bongs instead of terrorists, 911 might have been prevented. It was soccer moms who were convinced to vote for republicans via the scare mongering of their children having access to drugs. Of course prohibition makes drugs more dangerous, more available, of totally unregulated and thus dangerously unknown purity or potency, and makes them naughty and thus alluring to kids. Finding out marijuana is not at all as risky to use as legal alcohol, kids loose respect for adult and governmental advice too. And might OBL have not have had a Taliban government at all were it not for the profitability of opium poppies solely due to drug prohibition? Billions of dollars are still being diverted from real law enforcement and intelligence gathering. It's also soccer moms who made it illegal to have guns despite the second amendment(!), which makes our society much less "polite" so doors are now locked and burgler alarms armed. The number of children who are injured due to the criminal advantage of gun control, illegal drug profiteering, and a lack of focus on real risks is huge. Then you must add the soccer mom votes for scare-tactic-environmentalism, which by by thwarting our energy industries drags us into oil producer politics. Why are soccer moms so easily manipulated with fear of things like drugs, guns, or a falling sky, but cannot be convinced that violent people should be destroyed?

"Prohibition goes beyond the bonds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes." – Abraham Lincoln

Seen at low tide

  • American White Pelican
Saw 30 in one flock on a weptember evening while fishing
  • Hummingbird
Finally, my first hummingbirds. Saw them on a fire bush in Crystal Beach, FL. My rental's neighbor's yard is all xeriscaped, which is ugly to me but just fine with the little hummers. At first, I thought they were the biggest hornets I'd ever seen.
  • Flamingo!
One of these dudes flew right over my house. I couldn't believe it. And please don't tell me it was a roseated spoonbill because it was a frickin' flamingo, dude! Huge and pink and right there above me. I was like so freaking out, you know?
  • Falcon!
Don't see these guys too often. Wish we did. Bet the morning doves don't.
  • Black Skimmer
These beauties are getting scarce, but one flew by yesterday at low tide on the hunt for minnows.
  • Dead sea turtle
    cool, but smelly
  • Reddish Egret
These have been hanging out around the pool quite a bit lately. Must be a new group of adolesent birds -- the youngsters like to hunt where the water is clear, and it takes them a day to figure out there are not now and never will be fish in the swimming pool no matter how clear the water.
  • Sand Piper
  • Brown Pelican
I saw a flock of about 200 of these at Disappearing Island yesterday, just south of Anclote Island on the west coast of FL. Good to see such a large flock.
  • Wood Pecker
They've developed a sudden interest in the orange tree, which just went into bloom.
