From The Weekly Standard:
THE JUXTAPOSITION last week was startling. On the same day, (a) voters in the Missouri primary overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment establishing marriage as being exclusively between a man and a woman, and (b) a state judge in Washington ruled that the 19th-century writers of that state's constitution had made exclusively heterosexual marriage unconstitutional. The article goes on to list very similar voting in every state where it has been on a ballot, including Massachusets (sorry, no spell-checker, I'm at Granny's house), Alaska, Hawaii, Nebraska, and Nevada. The vote in Missouri was not close: 71 percent in favor of the constitutional amendment, 29 percent against.
BUT, we on the Right must not look mean on this! We must ALWAYS phrase our arguments in terms of love, never of hate. We must talk about protecting the children, the children, the children. Show your compassion for gay people, but sadly state that facts must be faced. Sad, but the will of the people must be heard, not the will of a handful of Democrat-appointed judges.
Remember, Soccer Mom is listening. She doesn't want Gay Marriage to be the same as hers, but she's probably embarrassed to say so in public. She doesn't have anything against gays, but she knows that equating gay marriage with normal marriage isn't right. But she couldn't tell you why. Now, to make use of this in the campaign you'll have to get a little technical, because:
So on this, as on so many other issues, Edwards is in complete agreement with [Democrat Nominee John Kerry]: He is in favor of the right of states to define marriage, but opposed to the federal legislation that sought to guarantee each state the right to keep its own definition. When Marge the Soccer Mom gives you that blank look, just say that once again, the Senator from Massachusets is trying to have it both ways, and is trying to fool her. He wants her to think he's against gay marriage, but when it comes to votes and appointments, he'll do everything he can to pay back a vital constituencey of his party -- the Gay Lobby (which is, no doubt, tastefully decorated ;-).
When it comes up in the fall campaign, as it certainly will, the issue will be what to do about this collision between democratic decision-making and judicial ambition. President Bush will have a clear answer: He will fight to preserve marriage, and his opponent will not. How does Bush know this? Kerry opposes changing the Constitution to preserve traditional marriage. He was one of 14 senators to vote against legislation to let states preserve it. And he is committed to appointing the kind of federal judges who created the problem in the first place. That's what I'm talking about. Don't say "fight to preserve marriage". Say something like "we have to work together to keep common sense. We can't let a handful of Northeastern judges tell us that left is right, and up is down. Sure, by all means, let's make it possible for gay lovers to visit one another in the hospital. Let's help them write their wills so they can pass on what they want to whom they want. But let's keep marriage defined as it has always been defined. That's conservative."

Mr Reiss says he has not been surprised by the victims. "People are much more discerning now about how they spend their money and you have to keep moving forward as a brand. If you don't have that sense of uniqueness or give customers what they want, you are going to struggle. You have to be adaptable and understand your customer. It's a tough world out there."
