This guy, Steven Den Beste, was the best. His engineer's approach to understanding the world and everything in it, and refuting all the lazy bull crap written about it, did as much as anyone else to get me started with my humble blog. I read his site, USS Clueless, every day -- and that was usually a 45 minute commitment, because Mr. Den Beste was nothing if not thorough or, as he would say, rigorous.
Then suddenly and without warning, he announced he was going to stop blogging. I couldn't understand it. He wrote that he was sick & tired of the criticism he was getting. I could understand that, to a point, but the critics he specifically mentioned as being intolerable were those who just refused to believe in the impossibility of alternative energy sources. WTF? The guy brushed off quite vicious assaults from political lefties and Ba'ath fellow travelers but couldn't take the windmills & solar energy crowd? It just didn't make sense, which is the one thing he never failed to do (never mind his obsession with Japanese cartoons, OK?).
Then today in Winds of Change we learn the real reason. Oh dammit.
